Sometimes Less is More

When it comes to your skin, you may be doing more harm than good.  We often try to overcompensate from flaws in our skin and end up causing other types of damage.  This damage usually leaves tell-tale signs that will alert you of a possible problem with your skin care routine.  Here are a few warning signs that you should consider when it comes to your skin and your health.

Bumps and Redness – If your skin starts to show redness or bumps, it may be fighting an allergic reaction to something in one of your beauty products.  This rash may be due to fragrances or preservatives in the product.  Sensitive skin requires products that are gentler to the skin and that lack fragrances.

Skin Tightness – When your skin feels tight, you may think that’s a good sign; however, it is a sign that your skin is dry and lacking moisture.  This can cause an increase in oil production and large pores, which are unwanted in the skin care world.

Acne – If you are experiencing breakouts, it may be due to one of your skin care routine products.  Once you experience a breakout, you may try and attack it with acne-fighting products.  However, when piling up these products they may be drying out the skin and irritating it more than the acne.

Dry Skin – When your skin is dry and irritated it has lost its protective barrier that locks moisture inside.  Dry skin can occur due to a lack of moisture, UV rays, and cold weather.  There are also some components of your skin care routine that may be contributing like denatured alcohol and scrubs.

Oily Skin – Sometimes your skin will hit an oil patch and you may be tempted to get an oil-reducing product.  The problem is that oil may be a side effect of over-drying in your skin.  Try limiting oil-absorbing skin care products in your routine.

Tips to Prevent Skin Problems

Now that we have discussed some of the warning signs, it is important to discuss some tips to keep your skin in check.

One at a Time – Introduce new products one at a time into your skin care routine to ensure that you can tolerate the product and that it won’t cause any adverse effects to your skin.

Exfoliation – Don’t exfoliate too often or with too many types of products.  You can exfoliate with acids, scrubs, brushes, microdermabrasion, and even retinol creams.  Make sure to use only one of these at a time or you may end up with red, flaky, and sun-sensitive skin.

Water – Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.  It also helps to flush toxins out of the body.

Sunscreen – Make sure you are protecting your skin with proper sunscreen to prevent sun damage, cancer, and aging skin.

Moisturize – Make sure your skin is kept hydrated and moisturized.  Ensure that products are non-comedogenic, so that they don’t clog pores and cause blackheads and acne.
