Men’s Skin Care Tips

Submitted by Patrick Hatfield on

Skin care is important to your body and your overall health, especially because it is our body’s largest organ.  Women tend to use hundreds of products to maintain the health of their skin.  However, men often neglect the health of their skin.  There are differences between women and men’s skin, but both genders need to ensure they are cleansing and moisturizing their skin to protect it from the harsh elements that exist in nature.

Is your Skin Different?

Yes, indeed your skin is actually different from a woman’s skin.  Men’s skin is actually up to 25% thicker than women’s skin.  It may be due to hormones, but either way it takes longer to thin out and show your age.  Men’s skin is also more tightly knitted together than women’s.  The skin in males is also naturally oilier, which keeps it moisturized better than skin in females.

Tips

Lather – Make sure to wash your skin and lather up.  This will help to remove the dead skin cells that may be stuck together on your face.  Consider exfoliating once a week to stimulate the growth of new skin, but don’t do it too often or it may become irritated.

Hydrate – Lotions will keep the moisture in, but water hydrates from the inside out.  It is important to drink at least 6 glasses of water a day and reduce caffeine and alcohol to keep yourself hydrated.

Moisturize – You must truly consider moisturizers for your skin.  These should be products made for your face that are oil-based to seal in moisture.  If you are prone to oily skin, make sure to find a moisturizer that is water-based.

Retinol – Consider preemptive strikes against wrinkles by using retinol.  Retinol is a cell growth and collagen booster that will reduce fine lines and keep your skin looking young and fresh.  Some products contain moisturizers and retinol all-in-one.  Just make sure to stay out of the sun when using retinol, because it can make you sun-sensitive.

Shaving – It is best to shave after a shower, when the pores are opened up from the steam.  Shaving only in the direction of your hair is the best way to keep your skin healthy and the least damaged from razor burn or bumps.

Sunscreen – Apply sunscreen to your face every day.  Even when it is cloudy or overcast, the UVA/UVB rays can still shine down and cause damage to your skin.  This damage can lead to skin cancer or just increased aging to your skin.

Eat your Fruits and Veggies – These healthy foods are good for your body and your health.  They are also great for fighting off free radicals, which are responsible for damage to the skin and aging.  The vitamins and nutrients in these foods can also improve your skin tone.

Sleep – Make sure you get your sleep and are able to fix the days damage.  Sleep can help with repair to fight wrinkles and breakouts.  It will also help your body function at its best and keep stress at bay.
